OH, THE DAY I WAS BORN

The day that I was born
Which aster reigned over the world?
Just forsaken and forlorn
My star makes me be always hurt

Actually, this is not what Imperio Argentina used to sing, as she used to sing in Spanish. It's just my own English version, in case you want to sing it in a different way. Why not? The easiest ones out of which to make an English version are, precisely, those by the so-called 'folclóricas', including Rocío Jurado's. Ms Argentina actually sang it like this:

El día que nací yo,
¿qué planeta reinaría?
Por donde quiera que voy,
¡qué mala estrella me guía!

Whether you believe in astrology or not, pop music teems with lines referring to one’s birth and fate: I was born to be alive, I was born to love you, I was born in 1981 / And to me / My life has just begun / We are the 80s …

Well, I was born on 25 March, 1962, and not many people can boast of having been born on the same day as Espronceda con diez cañones por banda, viento en popa a toda vela, or rather, on the same day exactly 154 years later, lucky me! Well, but then again exactly 20 years earlier than David Bustamante, which means that while he was in hospital because he had this important task to do, I was also in hospital … recovering from a car accident!

So, this is the truth and nothing but the truth. Who was born on this day in history?  On March the 25th, these less relevant people – than good old Busta, I mean – started to cry, sleep, suck, burp, and make their mothers busy:
Which means that I share my birthday with the singer of some songs you know very well (The moment I wake, before I put on my make-up, make-up, I say a little prayer for you, forever and ever …), as well as the man who played Starsky in Starsky and Hutch, Sir Elton John, S. J. Parker and Busta! As regards my exact date of birth, however, I share it with an actress that very few Spanish people know, and a handsome, tall Spaniard (like myself) who died in a car crash (unlike me) and you may not have heard about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STKkWj2WpWM

Talking of dead people, Spanish flamenco guitarrist Fernando de la Rosa  passed away at the age of 30 the day my grandfather commented I looked like a gypsy after his daughter (my mother) showed me to him, while my father was attending customers in the ‘shop-section’ of the very old house …  at 7 a.m. on a Sunday!

What else? Well, nothing much. I mean, yes, of course, one of the major events was an attack carried out against Algerians by the OAS (Organisation de l'Armée Secrète), at the time when Algeria was involved in getting its independence from France. 110 people died and 147 got injured that day.

What about your date of birth? What about famous people whose birthday is the same as yours? Please share your info! Oh, and sign your comment, please.

  2. Dear all,

It's Carlos Olmo speaking out there....

Here I am waiting for the sun to shine. I have to ride my bike, but it's still raining, so it's a good moment to post.

Of course, and I'm sure you probably now I was born to be wild ... like Steppenwolf said in the sixties: "get your motor running, head out on the highway, looking for adventure and whatever comes our way..."

    I was just kidding !!!!
I was born on the first of January, 1968 and I'm sure you're jelous because my birthday is the biggest party of the year... everybody celebrates my birthday worldwide, (you were thinking that day all the people celebrate the new year, but you're wrong, people are celebrating my birthday, absolutely...).

Who was born on the same day as me?
Many people, of course, but you probably know Davor Suker, the Croatian football player. Do you remember his team? Real Madrid and he became famous due to an affair with Ana Obregón...

Actually, surfing the internet I've found out that most of the people born on the same day as me are sports players, to be honest, I used to practise sports, but now I'm a little bit lazy...

One anecdote, two film makers from Hong Kong were born the same day as me, and it's very curious, they made some films together, Alan Mak and Felix Chong.

Oops!!!! Rain is stopping. I must get out of here (I'm still in the office...).

Have a nice weekend everybody !!!!

    1. Oh my, Carlos. I've replied to your post, but the internet connection went out and it seems I've lost the whole thing. What a pity! I think you'd've liked it!

I've learnt the lesson, though: Orange/Orans/Oráns/Oranch hates me, whatever we call them, and I really must start with a Word doc rather than in my own blog.

Well, must pack my case and fly in a few hours.

Thank you for your wonderful contribution.

  3. Dear all,

I'd like to share something I've learnt today watching TV....

There was a time when the old sailors measured the speed of their ships using a simple device: they tied a rope to a log (a piece of wood). Then, they threw it to the sea and depending on the speed of the ship, they had to tie more knots on the rope to get more resistance in order to not to lose the log. That's the reason why the speed is measured in knots. They also wrote down the data in a book, the "logbook" (regarding the piece of wood, the log....), so all the comments were registered in the log.

Nowadays, when we're registering our comments in the web, we use a "weblog"....

    You guessed !!!!
That's the origin of the word "blog", the place located in the internet where we can register all of our comments.

    Curiosities....
    Take care.

  5. Hi there,
Here is my research about some curiosities related to my birthday: important events that happened in the day of my birthday, some famous people who were born the same day as me (but many years before than me, of course). I have to recognise that doing this task I realised I knew nothing about the day of my birthday, apart from I was born on this day. First of all, let’s talk about me, I’m Javier Martin (that’s not important for this topic, but I wanted to introduce myself) and I was born on 26th of September in 1985 (nobody asked me when I wanted to). Searching for information on the internet, I found out some facts related with music: On the day of my birthday but in the year 1969, the Beatles’ album ‘Abbey Road’ was published in England, and in 1961 Bob Dylan appeared for first time on a radio station. Let’s enjoy with the music of those amazing musicians:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3h2mWWuPu8
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxzEeKfpyIg
And now, some historical stuff: Did you know that, again on the day of my birthday, but in the year 1580 Sir Francis Drake, an infamous British pirate, finished his circumnavigation of the earth? It was the second time that human being reached this fact, 58 years and 20 days later than the pioneers: ‘Ferdinand Magellan’ and ‘Juan Sebastian Elcano’, both from Iberian Peninsula.
Related to people who were born the same day as me, here are the most famous I found, with each respective year of birth:
1181: ‘Francisco de Asis’, Catholic Saint and founder of Franciscan religious order.
1754: ‘Louis Proust’, French chemist who developed his career mainly in Spain.
1849: ‘Ivan Pavlov’, Russian physiologist, famous for developing the ‘respondent conditioning’ theory. This theory was discovered by the help of the experiment better known as ‘Pavlov’s dogs’.
1948: ‘Olivia Newton John’, English actress. She co-starred in the movie ‘Grease’ with John Travolta.
I also discovered that the day of my birthday (let me remind you that it was the 26th of September) is also the ‘European Day of Languages’, which its aim is to support the language learning across Europe. This day is the ‘International Day of Deafness’, too.
I want to finish my contribution in this blog with two funny videos that have nothing to do with the main topic, but with English speaking:

  7. 9 May 1973 was a very important day in history. Can you guess why?. You´re right, it was me who was born at that time!.
You know, I was only jocking... now seriously, surfing the net I´ve found some important events that happened and some interesting people who were born, on 9 May.

9 May Victory Day commemorates the German Nazis surrender to the Soviet Union in 1945.

9 May it is also the European Union day, of which our country is (still) a member.

John Brown (May 9, 1800) was an American abolitionist who used violent actions to fight slavery.

James Matthew Barrie (9 May 1860) was a Scottish author and dramatist, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan.

Howard Carter (9 May 1874) was a well known English archaeologist.

José Ortega y Gasset (9 May 1883) was a Spanish liberal philosopher and essayist working during the first half of the 20th century while Spain oscillated between monarchy, republicanism and dictatorship.

    Alan Bennett(9 May 1934)English autor.

Glenda Jackson (9 May 1936), English actress and politician.

José Rafael Moneo (9 May 1937) Spanish architect.

Candice Bergen (May 9, 1946) American actress and former fashion model.

Billy Joel (May 9, 1949) is an American pianist, singer-songwriter, and composer. His first hit song was "Piano Man," in 1973, the year I was born.

Since a was a child I´ve always loved the fact of have being born in such a month like May, because days are long, weather is warm, and that is perfect to organise a wonderful birthday party outdoors!.

  9. Hello!!!I’m Graciela Alonso (EOI-SSR-A1E)

I was born on 5 May, 1987. Like Wikipedia says “May 5 is the 125th day of the year (126th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. There are 240 days remaining until the end of the year.” Never until now I hadn’t used my time to look for what relevant things happened or who was born in that date.

Karl Marx (German philosopher) and Craig David (English singer) were born exactly 169 and 6 years earlier than me, respectively. On the other hand, Adele (English singer) is only and exactly one year younger than me. About Spanish people I can find that Pedro Reyes (Spanish comedian) was born in 1961 on the same date.

Now is the turn of famous deaths, the most important death is the Napoleon’s. On 5 May, 1821 emperor Napoleon I (French military and political leader)dies in exile on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean.

About events, one of the most saddest is the Ángel Pascual Mugica’s assassination by the terrorist group ETA in 1982, but also there were happy events like in 1891 the Music Hall in New York City (later known as Carnegie Hall) had its grand opening and first public performance, with Tchaikovsky as the guest conductor and in 1890 in Spain was enacted universal suffrage law.

If you search in Wikipedia, you can find much more information about my birthday’s date, but I have tried to resume all information in the most relevant things about it.

    Graciela Alonso.

  12. Hello! Well, searching on the internet, and choosing the most interesting things I found, I have found that on the 8 of November, my birthday, so many things happened, including for example, that in 1793, Paris opened to the public the Louvre museum. Another thing that happened, and that is very important, was that in 1895 the physicist Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays. Something very important too was in 1965, when it passed the Murder law, wich abolishing the death penalty in the UK.
In 1972, HBO began broadcasting. Personally I love all of the HBO series, so I'm very praised by this. Also on November 8, 1988, George Bush (father) was elected president in EE. UU. Years later, and this less important but as something of gossip, in 2011 Shakira received a star on the Wall of Fame. Speaking of deaths, in 1969, Joseph P. Kennedy was assassinated. A few years later, speaking now of births, Masashi Kishimoto, a manga artist, was born in 1974. On the same date it launches his first comic, Naruto. Naruto is one of my favorite comics, and I consider Masashi one of the greatest manga artists, so I always have been proud to say I was born the same day as him. Well, that's all I have found, I hope that you like It. :)

I was born on 2nd January 1989 in Madrid.
I think my birth was the most important fact in this day that year, as I couldn't find any event. However, I could find in another year at the same day, for instance, that President Richard Nixon signed a bill lowering the maximum U.S. speed limit to 55mph in order to conserve gasoline during and OPEC embargo.

My date of birth, 2nd January 1989 matches with the date of birth of Romaina Dedola, who is a French footballer who plays for SSV Jahn Regensburg (I have no idea what team is it), and Maksims Bogdanovs, a Latvian motorcycle speedway rider.

Talking about birthday, we can find more famous people who were born in this day. A few actors like James Marshall, in 1967, from "A few Good Men"; Walter Baldwin, who was born just 100 years before me; or the Spanish actress Paz Vega in 1976.

In another way, there are some CEOs that were born in the same day, like Rod Eddington, CEO of British Airways, or James J. Schiro, CEO of Zurich Financial Services.
Someday, I will be a CEO too.

    Best regards,

    Mar Carrillo, Advanced I F.
